Nails / Fasteners for Cedar Wood
Why are stainless steel fasteners suitable for cedar wood clad buildings?  The hot dipped galvanised, aluminium and stainless steel nails are all corrosion resistant and can be used for the cedar wood.  Other types of nails such as electroplated are generally not suitable as they are prone to rusting and disintegrating and reacting with the natural cedar wood oils resulting in staining.
It was adopted as a generic name for these steels and now covers a wide range of steel types and grades for corrosion or oxidation resistant applications.
Stainless steels are iron alloys with a minimum of 10.5% chromium. Other alloying elements are added to enhance their structure and properties such as formability, strength and cryogenic toughness. Stainless steel is the best choice for most applications either 304 and 316 grade.  The 304 grade of stainless steel provides adequate resistance whilst the 316 grade provides resistant to salt air.  Hot dipped galvanised is the most widely used and economical.
